01 Nov CLUBSWAN MEMBERS EXPERIENCE – Swan 65 Force 9 of London at the 51st edition of Barcolana
After her participation in the Rolex Capri Sailing Week in Spring and a great Med cruising season this Summer, Swan 65 Force 9 of London sailed to Trieste in order to take part in the 51st edition of Barcolana, which this year counted more than 2000 yachts participating.
Special guest on board was Carolina Stramare, winner of the 2019 Miss Italia (the beauty contest awarding prizes every year to young, female contestants from Italy). Carolina joined a crew of young sailors coming from the Sailing School of Trieste (Società Triestina della Vela). The calm sea strongly affected the entire regatta and made the race difficult for Force 9 due to her 35 tons. However, the crew proved to be capable to take advantage of every puff of wind gaining 2nd place in class and 121st overall among more than 1000 yachts arriving at the finish line. “We have finished the regatta with an unexpected and excellent position, given the unfavourable weather conditions (the wind was never more than 5 knots)”, declared Giorgio Pitter, the skipper. “At the start line we weren’t sure we would even manage to reach the finish; the strategic choice was to not to fly the Code Zero but to keep the genoa to sail straight for the buoy. Finally, we left behind more modern performance yachts. A great satisfaction in a pure “Barcolana” spirit”.
Force 9 of London is the 9th unit of Swan 65 by Sparkman & Stephens. She was launched in 1974 and took part in the Whitbread Round the World Race of 1977-78 and was the first yacht to finish with a female skipper, the British yachtswoman Clare Francis.
