20 Jul Extreme 2 Dominates ClubSwan 28 Fleet at NYYC Race Week Newport
From July 16–19, 2026, the 16th edition of Race Week returned to the legendary waters of Newport, Rhode Island.
Since its debut in 1998, the New York Yacht Club’s biennial regatta has established itself as one of North America’s premier sailing events, renowned for world-class competition, exceptional race management, and the iconic sailing conditions of Narragansett Bay.
Hosted at NYYC Harbour Court, the regatta featured racing across ORC, Multihulls, Classics, 12 Metres, and a variety of one-design classes, including the increasingly competitive ClubSwan 28 fleet.
Over four days of close racing, tactical challenges, and spectacular sailing, the ClubSwan 28 teams delivered another thrilling chapter in the Nations League USA circuit. Newport marked the fourth event of the American series, which now looks ahead to the Nautor Swan Rendez-Vous, taking place in Newport from August 7–9.
The Rendez-Vous will bring together the American Swan community for the U.S. sailing debut of the Swan 51 during the Safe Harbor Race Weekend. Owners, crews, and friends of the brand will celebrate Nautor Swan’s 60th anniversary through a curated programme of racing and social events in one of the world’s most iconic sailing destinations. Following the celebrations in Pietarsaari and Newport, the anniversary festivities will culminate in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, during the Rolex Swan Cup, where more than 150 Swans of every size and ambition are expected to gather.
Extreme 2 Sets the Benchmark
In Newport, the ClubSwan 28 fleet enjoyed four days of outstanding racing, with Extreme 2 emerging as the clear overall winner after an impressive and remarkably consistent performance. The team finished on 20 points, securing victory by a commanding 13-point margin over Mini Gal, while Freya completed the podium in third place.
The opening day presented highly tactical racing, with shifty winds and varying breeze strength demanding constant focus and quick decision-making. Every point proved valuable from the outset as Extreme 2 established an early lead ahead of Freya.
Day two brought steadier conditions, with approximately 12 knots of breeze creating ideal racing. The final race of the day proved to be one of the most exciting of the regatta, with the lead changing hands at nearly every mark rounding. Extreme 2 held its nerve to take another race victory ahead of Mini Gal and Freya, extending its advantage at the top of the standings.
The final two days delivered classic Newport “champagne sailing” conditions, allowing the fleet to showcase close one-design racing at its finest. While an intense battle developed for second place, Extreme 2 confirmed itself as the boat to beat with another series of composed, consistent performances.
Led by Dan Cheresh, Extreme 2 has established itself as one of the most successful teams on the international ClubSwan 28 circuit. The team continues to lead the Nations League standings and adds Race Week Newport to its growing list of achievements after also winning the season’s second event in Pensacola. The experienced crew, including Brad Boston and Zeke Horowitz, once again demonstrated exceptional teamwork and consistency throughout the regatta.
Reflecting on the victory, Dan Cheresh said:
“We kept the pressure on every day and in every race. I never like to relax because you never know what’s going to happen. These boats are incredibly close, and the teams are extremely talented, so we just focus on sailing our own race and doing our own thing.
“The chemistry on board was really good, especially considering we hadn’t sailed together much as a group. I’m pleasantly surprised by how quickly everything came together.
“The class is incredibly competitive. The boats are all very similar in speed, which is exactly what you want in one-design racing. If you sail well, the results come your way. If you make mistakes, you pay for them.”
