My Swan Moment

In 1973, Sayula II, a 65-foot ketch crafted by Sparkman & Stephens, embarked on history-making waters: the inaugural Whitbread Round the World Race.
Skippered by Mexican businessman Ramón Carlin, a self-described weekend sailor, and crewed by family and friends, Sayula II faced 152 grueling days and 32,500 miles of relentless ocean. Towering waves, punishing storms, and a dramatic knock-down in the Indian Ocean tested their resolve—but the crew and boat persevered, finishing ahead of professional teams and earning a remarkable victory.

Over fifty years later, Sayula II continues to sail with the Carlin family, a living symbol of resilience and the call of the horizon. Translated 9 carries that same adventurous spirit. Carefully restored for the Ocean Globe Race 2023, she embodies the essence of classic offshore racing: endurance and the sheer thrill of being at sea.

In the year leading up to the race, off La Paz, Marco Trombetti and Isabelle Andrieu joined the Carlin family as the two Swan 65s sailed side by side in a moment of inspiration drawn from a legendary voyage.

From Sayula II to Translated 9, a legacy carried forward.
