New York Yacht Club 175th Anniversary Regatta
July 15th to 20th, 2019 - Newport (RI) - USA

Seven Swans attended this iconic regatta founded in 1844. Among them, three ClubSwan 42 yachts, and in particular the winner of the last Swan American Regatta, “Barleycorn”.
As per tradition, participation was limited to members of the New York Yacht Club and the four invited yacht clubs (Royal Thames Yacht Club, Royal Yacht Squadron, St. Francis Yacht Club and Yacht Club Costa Smeralda) and the U.S. service academies entering yachts with a LOA of 30 feet or greater (IRC/ORC or equivalent as well as classics).
It was a great result for the Swan fleet: Apparition and Barleycorn finished in first and second place respectively in ORC 2 Class.

Copa del Rey Mapfre
July 27th to August 3rd, 2019 – Palma de Mallorca (SPA)

The 38th edition of the Copa del Rey was the final, decisive event in the Swan One Design Mediterranean League and the regatta saw the participation of 37 Swan yachts and in particular: fourteen ClubSwan 50s, eleven ClubSwan 42s and six Swan 45s racing in Swan One Design Classes. The remaining six Swan yachts competed in ORC 1 and ORC 2. In this edition, Swan yachts constituted a quarter of the Mediterranean’s supreme regatta’s total fleet.
11 countries were represented by the Swan One Design yachts racing at the Copa del Rey and, aside from the glory associated with competing for one’s nation, the country winning the Best-placed Nation this year will carry a point forward to The Nations Trophy 2019, scheduled for Palma in October.
The 14 ClubSwan 50s comprised stellar crew and some of the world’s leading tacticians. In attendance this week, are the likes of Bouwe Bekking (Niramo), Tommaso Chieffi (Cuordileone), Pietro D'Ali (Drifter Sail), Chris Larson (Earlybird) and Jochen Schumann (Onegroup).
Demonstrating the clear virtues of immaculate teamwork and consistency in results, Leonardo Ferragamo’s ClubSwan 50 Cuordileone, Luis Senis Segarra’s Swan 45 Porron IX and Natalia Brailoiu’s ClubSwan 42 Natalia were deserved winners at the Real Club Nautico de Palma’s blue riband event. The three were also winners of the Mediterranean League: Italy were the winners of the Best Placed Nation at the Copa del Rey and across the League.
Great results also for the Swans competing in ORC 1 (Swan 45 Rats on Fire got the second place and the Swan 45 From Now On was third) and in ORC 2: CS 42 Teatro Soho Caixabankwas second while CS 42 Riva Reno was third.

CLUBSWAN MEMBERS EXPERIENCE

Swan 78 Sulità Baltics cruise

Tiziano Sgarbi, proud owner of Swan 78 Sulità, shares this cruising experience from Kokkola to Spain: “Leaving Kokkola by sailing to reach the Balearic Islands means to meet different European faces, all of them narrated by the sea.
The frozen Baltic onto which Finland looks is a sheet of steel when it is quiet. Then, the Northern Sea, rippled surface and tricky for its colour, almost brown, below puffed up clouds. Therefore, the infinite Atlantic Ocean along the French coasts. And then the Mediterranean Sea; the wobbly horizon line melts with the blue of the sea, the green of the florid vegetation, the white of the tiny villages.
Pietarsaari, 46k residents, is a white paradise in winter, while in the summertime it opens to a little mildness, without forgetting cutting winds. The whole crew is bundled up: 10 persons including the captain, Stefano Visintin, and Anders Skogman, the Finnish reserved sailor who never speaks but knows each secret of the Northern Sea. Sometimes his gaze is our guide.
Thanks to two-hour shifts, we reach Stockholm, a city of almost perfect beauty, where the crew takes a rest to visit the city by bicycle.
Then another stop in Copenhagen and again by sea towards Kiel, an unmissable leg with its 100 km of artificial canal to save time.
Our trip continues with Amsterdam, the English Channel, Normandy, the Ocean, Gibraltar.
Finally, the sunny beauty of southern Europe welcomes us. The cutting cold is now only a vague memory.”

Aon INSIGHT - A focus on Aid and Rescue

This month we would like to reflect on the issue of aid and rescue and, more specifically, the unpleasant circumstances when you may be in need of it.
Generally, we speak about aid when the subject that is requiring assistance is able to cooperate, otherwise, we are dealing with a situation of rescue.
Generally, the best thing to do is to contact the Port Authority on VHF channel 16 and let them manage the assistance operation, but in some cases, you could be assisted by another yacht. In this eventuality, the assisting vessel is obliged to provide assistance to save the lives of people onboard, but there is no obligation to recover the yacht.
If recovery of the yacht is attempted, the rescuer is entitled to ask the owner a reward equal to the value of the yacht, plus items onboard at the time of salvage. In these circumstances, you are entitled to contest the claim in law.
If you find yourself in this unpleasant situation, your insurance company can provide important help. Indeed, many insurers may instruct an expert with the specific duty of dealing with the salvage party and find a fair compromise on his eventual remuneration.
Otherwise, what often happens is that the owner fails to negotiate with the salvage party, and finds himself committed to paying an improper compensation. This situation may critically slow down the negotiation process because it will make it harder to find an acceptable compromise between the two parties.

LYMAN MORSE

The Lyman-Morse boatyards in both Thomaston and Camden have seen a flurry of Swan activity this season. In Thomaston, 2 Nautor’s Swan 100s sat side-by-side this winter in our Thomaston “green” building as both underwent major refits. Red Sky was the recipient of new teak decks and a new engine, while Virago underwent work to receive a new engine, new generator, refrigeration and an overhaul of PLC system.
In Camden, Nautor’s Swan 62, Atem, arrived early summer straight from a circumnavigation. After time in South Africa, she is heading towards the Caribbean and up to Maine. She will undergo a significant refit over the next few months before she heads back to warmer waters for the winter. A hit list of some of the work we’ll be performing includes:
