NAUTOR'S SWAN YACHTS SUCCESS AT COPA DEL REY REGATTA

As is the annual tradition, the first week of August marked one of the most prestigious regattas in the Mediterranean sailing calendar, the Copa Del Rey Audi Mapfre. Hosted by Real Club Nautico de Palma, in the fantastic racing conditions off of the coast of Palma de Majorca, a number of Swan 45s and Club Swan 42s gathered amongst the international entries. Almost a hundred boats from 18 countries, among which some of the world’s top teams, fought for the coveted trophies.

The conditions for the opening day of races were ideal; 9 to 12 knots of south-easterly breeze. However, these conditions were not to last and a shifty breeze on the second day only allowed for one race. The third day saw the traditional coastal race, a thirty miles long course in 12 to 15 knots of wind. There were big swings in the top positions for most of the classes, which resulted in three very exciting final days of racing.

Spanish Swan 45, Rats on Fire, owned and helmed by Rafael Carbonell, took the overall win in the RI 1 Class having fought off a highly challenging fleet to dominate the class with a 10.5 point lead over second place. The same fleet also saw some competitive results from Swan 45, Axelles, and Swan 46, Ay Ay Ay. The Club Swan 42s enjoyed a good performance in IRC B; Natalia, Cuordileone and Long Echo finished 9th, 10th and 11th respectively.

One of the newest models, the sleek racer/cruiser Swan 60 turned heads in the harbour. For Swan 60, Emma, this was her first regatta with owner Johann Killinger proving she will be one to watch at the Rolex Swan Cup having finished in a credible sixth place overall in IRC A narrowly beating the Swan 601, @Robas, owned by Gerard Logel who is currently leading the Swan Maxi Class Circuit.

The event forms the penultimate regatta in the Swan 45 International and European Circuit before the World Championships which is held in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. The same week, Porto Cervo will be host to the 16th Rolex Swan Cup, the pinnacle feature in the Swan calendar. Once again Porto Cervo will become the centre of the Nautor’s Swan community with upwards of 100 Swan yachts competing in the waters off the Sardinian coast. The biennial event attracts both modern and classic Swan yachts and will feature the Club Swan 42 and Swan 45 one-design classes as well as the Swan Maxi Class, Grand Prix Class and Sparkman and Stephens Class. A draw for top sailors and amateurs alike, the Rolex Swan Cup provides a unique week of racing and gala social events for which Nautor’s Swan are renowned.
