CS 42's RACE AT NEW YORK YACHT CLUB RACE WEEK

July 17 - 24 saw the 156th New York Yacht Club (NYYC) Race Week at Newport, Rhode Island, officially kicking off the sailing season in New England for the US Club Swan 42 fleet. This year the 15 boat strong NYYC Swan 42 class saw a very similar result to 2009.

Arethusa helmed by Phil Lotz won his second consecutive U.S. Nationals and is having a stellar season so far. Although his team posted four victories in six races, the racing was extremely close with all Swan 42’s finishing within a few feet of each other throughout the entire weekend. Second place was Glenn Darden and Philip Williamson’s “Hoss” which is a substantial improvement on last year’s result.

NYYC Race Week is one of America’s longest running regattas and this year attracted a total of 107 boats with crew from across the US and Europe. Aside from a stormy last day that interfered with racing, sailors were treated to sunshine and warm temperatures with a manageable 12-15 knot breeze as they raced on the waters of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.

The winners were presented with their prestigious prizes at the owner’s black tie dinner hosted by the New York Yacht Club on Wednesday July 21 where guests enjoyed cocktails and dinner.

Later this year the Club Swan 42 fleet will be competing at the esteemed Rolex Swan Cup taking place in the spectacular setting of Porto Cervo, Sardinia. This exclusive Swan event, 13 - 19 September, will have a variety for racing formats including windward / leeward, coastal racing as well as the long distance race around the spectacular La Maddalena islands National Park. This event has always been popular with Swan owners and as such is a key feature on the Swan racing/cruising calendar.
