ROUND THE ISLAND SUCCESS FOR SWAN 37 JACOBITE

The Round the Island Race, 19 June, run by the Island Sailing Club in Cowes saw 22 Swan yachts sailing around the Isle of Wight, bringing the waters alive in the race fleet of 1754 yachts. The race commenced with Dame Ellen Macarthur firing the start gun at 05:00 on the Cowes start line. Swan 37, Jacobite raced by Stephen James who finished in a corrected time of 07:24:05 won the IRC Division 3A class. Skipper Dudley Davenport collected the prize during the prize giving.

The Swan fleet finished with some very close corrected times, some with only minutes separating them. After Jacobite the next two Swan yachts to finish on corrected time where, Swan 36, Flyover, raced by John Wilson who had a time of 07:34:54. The third Swan yacht to finish on a corrected time of 07:39:14 was Swan 43, Cisne, skippered by Tony Thorpe.

Swan 65 Ketch, Desperado, owned by Richard Loftus, also put in a notable performance finishing third in the IRC Division 0 class with a corrected time of 08:13:33.

This annual race saw all yachts race west from Cowes around the waters by the needles which has shifting shingle banks off Hurst Castle. Yachts then head around the back of the Island past St Catherine’s point and round back into the Solent past Portsmouth to finish in Cowes. This year there was more wind than expected which was a motivating surprise for yachtsmen and women.

The Round the Island Race will next be held on the 25 June 2011 and another large turnout of Swan yachts will be expected in this unique race.
