SWAN 45’s CLAIM PODIUM PLACES AT NORTH SEA REGATTA

The North Sea Regatta was the first event of the Northern European Swan Challenge this year. The Challenge included the Royal Offshore Racing Club’s (RORC) offshore race from Harwich, UK to Scheveningham, NL on the 14 May, as well as the inshore races in the North Sea Regatta, 21 – 24 May.

Two Swan 45’s dominated both parts of the Swan Northern European Challenge. Firstly Swan 45, Charisma (NED), owned and raced by Nico Poons took second place in the offshore RORC race. Poons previously won the Swan 45 Gold Cup in 2009 and Monaco Yacht Club’s Yachtsman of the Year (2009). Closely behind Charisma was Swan 45 Checkmate (NED), owned and raced by Peter de Ridder who finished in third place.

The RORC offshore race saw yachts racing across the English Channel and into the North Sea to Scheveningham, NL. Swan 44 Selene also took part in this part of the race finishing in 28 position out of the 42 yachts that competed.

The inshore races at the North Sea Regatta attracted more swans including another Swan 45, Blue Label (USA), who came in 18th position, followed by Swan 53, Silveren Swaen (NED), owned by Piet Hein Bakker. CS42 Baraka GP, owned by Harmen Jan de Graff was also racing in the inshore races coming in 13th position.

Conditions at the North Sea Regatta inshore races really challenged the fleets with light airs and early foggy mornings. The race committee did have to postpone some racing however this did not damped the competitor’s spirits who had an excellent week racing in Scheveningham.

On winning the North Sea Regatta De Ridder commented, “At the beginning of this season, we optimized our Swan for IRC, with a smaller mainsail and mast top spinnakers. Today, we even beat Charisma without discard. This was a good warming-up for the Swan Worlds in September. We may borrow the Dutch No Limits to participate.”
