CS42 LONG ECHO WINS SWAN CARIBBEAN CHALLENGE 2010

The 2010 Swan Caribbean Challenge has been won by Barry Sampson onboard his CS42, Long Echo (GBR). Mr Sampson was presented with the prestigious Asprey Swan Caribbean Challenge trophy at Antigua Sailing Week’s prize giving.

The Swan fleet enjoyed champagne sailing at Antigua Sailing Week this year with moderate winds from the east to south-east and sparkling sunshine on the turquoise Caribbean waters. These conditions are every sailors dream and help to give the regatta its world class status.

Barry Sampson’s CS 42, Long Echo made her mark in the Racing 3 class with some excellent racing during the regatta. The racing in division 3 class was so competitive that there was often just seconds separating the yachts on corrected time. On winning the Swan Caribbean Challenge a delighted Barry Sampson commented, ‘We had a great week of racing and we all really enjoyed ourselves’.

In the Performance Cruising Class 1 Swan 48, Avocation and owner Karl Breyer maintained a steady position in the top half of the fleet finishing fourth overall. Avocation raced against two other Swan yachts in this class, Northern Child (GBR), Swan 51, owned by Christian Reynolds who finished fifth and another Swan 51, Star Chaser (GBR), owned by Winjand van den Boogaard who came in 8th position.

In Racing Class 2 four Swan yachts were fighting two separate battles. The first battle saw Swan 90, DSK Pioneer Investments (ITA), chartered by Andrea Casale who finished second overall only managing to break away on the final day of racing from Swan 56 CR, King Sturge (USA) who finished fourth. The second pair of Swan’s in this class battling it out were two 56’s. La Belle, chartered by Gideon Messink which finished sixth and Perseverance (USA), chartered by Chris Marsden who finished seventh.

Swan yachts also dominated the awards for Best Crewed Charter Yacht at Antigua Sailing Week with Swan yachts taking all three podium finishes. In first place was Swan 48 Avocation, second place had Swan 56 CR King Sturge and Swan 51 Northern Child took third.

The Swan Caribbean Challenge series is open to all Swan owners and this year compromised the St Marteen Heineken Regatta, International Rolex Regatta, BVI Spring Regatta and Antigua Sailing Week. To be eligible for the magnificent Silver Asprey Trophy the Swan yacht must have participated in two of the aforementioned regattas, with Antigua Sailing Week being the final and compulsory event.
